Ear seeding, also known as ear acupressure or ear reflexology, is a holistic wellness practice that involves placing small seeds or beads onto specific points on the ear. These ear seeds are typically tiny and are often made of natural materials like Vaccaria plant seeds or metal pellets. The placement of these seeds on the ear is believed to stimulate various reflex points that correspond to different areas of the body, like how reflexology works on the feet and hands. The goal of ear seeding is to promote balance and harmony within the body, alleviate stress, and address specific health concerns. This practice has gained popularity as a non-invasive, relaxing, and natural way to support overall well-being and is often embraced as a complementary therapy in the world of beauty and wellness. Ear seeding is favoured for its potential to reduce tension, enhance relaxation, and contribute to a sense of inner balance and tranquillity.
The ear is a micro-imitation of the whole body, comparing the shape to an inverted foetus, and modern clinical research provides strong evidence regarding its effect on neural pathways. It is derived from Traditional Chinese medicine, in which they believe that health depends on the flow of Qi (energy) in the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this energy travels along invisible pathways known as meridians which are found throughout the body including the ears. By placing the ear seeds on certain points along these meridian lines, it is thought to clear up any Qi blockages which will help with a variety of health conditions. Not only does auriculotherapy unblock the energy meridians, but it also stimulates the nerve connections between the ear and the central nervous system. The pressure applied to a particular point will trigger a nerve impulse from the ear to the brain, which in turn sends healing messages to the organ or system in which the health problem is located. When stimulated, the brain releases pain-relieving protein molecules called endorphins into the blood stream and therefore quickly calms chronic pain and discomfort.
Ear seeding can be performed alone, or as a complementary therapy to acupuncture or body acupressure. Traditionally, the ear seeds come from the flowering herb vaccaria, as they are small enough to sit precisely over one pressure point, however today they can also be found as metal or ceramic beads. The seeds are non-invasive and held in place with plaster-like tape which makes them hardly noticeable. The tan tape ear seeds contain latex and should not be used by those with a latex allergy. The treatment is suitable for clients who have a needle phobia or simply do not want to receive acupuncture.
